White Mountain National Forest

Help protect forest land and wilderness in the White Mountain National Forest, Maine Woods, Highlands and other areas of the Northeast. The White Mountain National Forest encompasses nearly 800,000 acres in New Hampshire and Maine, including beautiful hardwood forests, dense spruce-fir boreal forests, mountain streams, waterfalls, and glacial cirques. From the unforgiving extremes of Mount Washington to the murmuring brooks of the Sandwich Range, this National Forest contains some of the most remote and spectacular country in the Northeast.

Senate Passed the New England Wilderness Act of 2006 on Sept. 19
The bill creates over 82,000 acres of new wilderness and a 15,000 acre National Recreation Area on the White Mountain and Green Mountain National Forests of New Hampshire and Vermont. New Hampshire Wilderness Act of 2006
In late March, Senator Sununu and Congressmen Bradley and Bass (all R-NH) released the New Hampshire Wilderness Act of 2006 to protect some of the wildest places in the Whites. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) was the lead co-sponsor on the Senate legislation.

The New Hampshire Wilderness Act of 2006 would designate a new Wilderness area of approximately 23,700 acres in the Wild River region and expand the existing Sandwich Range Wilderness by approximately 10,800 acres. The legislation follows the recommendations of the recent U.S. Forest Service management plan for the White Mountain National Forest. Wilderness designation requires Congressional approval.
